Description

Physical description

cap, chinstrap and badge cap in sea-green (Tsarist Green) cloth, with red piping and cap band. Heavy gold wire-embroidery of oak-leaves on the front of the cap band, the whole surmounted by a cockade in gilt metal bearing a red enamelled star with a gilt hammer and sickle design. Black, patent leather peak with twisted gold wire edging and heavy gold wire embroidered oak leaves. The chin strap is gold and the two buttons bright gilt.

History note

Parade Dress Cap of a Marshal of the Soviet Union believed to have been the property of Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982), Soviet statesman and Communist Party official, leader of the USSR from 1964-1982. The cap was acquired from President Brezhnev's former personal bodyguard who claimed that he had been given the uniform and the President's driving licence by Mrs Brezhnev as payment in kind after the President's death.
