Description

Physical description

Light grey, double-breasted jacket with three sets of gilt buttons and two flap pockets. The jacket, which is lined with grey material, has two inner breast pockets secured by buttons. The lapels bear Marshal's oak leaves in gilt wire embroidery; the shoulderboards of a Marshal of the Soviet Union are in gold with red piping and there are gilt oak leaves on each cuff. This particular example has sixty-seven medal ribbons sewn onto the left breast, including ribbons for the Order of Victory, the Order of Lenin, various awards from former Warsaw Pact and Eastern Bloc countries such as Poland and Rumania.

History note

Summer uniform jacket of a Marshal of the Soviet Union, believed to have been the property of Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982), Soviet statesman and Communist Party official, leader of the USSR from 1964-1982. The jacket was acquired from President Brezhnev's former personal bodyguard who claimed that he had been given the uniform and the President's driving licence by Mrs Brezhnev as payment in kind after the President's death.
