- Description
- Stained glass two-mullioned window, which commemorates the service of Indian soldiers during World War Two. The central lower pane depicts a Sepoy armed with a Thompson sub-machine gun, marching through the Burma jungle beside a Sherman tank, with parachutes and aeroplanes overhead. Above that pane is one depicting a Matilda tank in North Africa. The lower left pane depicts a Sepoy holding a rifle and throwing a grenade in front of the Himalayas. The lower right pane depicts a crouching Sepoy with rifle in front of Monte Cassino. The upper left and right corners of the window depict the crests of the two Commanders in Chief during World War 2, i.e. Wavell 1941-1943 and Auchinleck 1941 and 1943-1947. Each of the panes bear the badges of specific Indian Army Divisions, including (top-left) the 10th and 23rd Divisions; (top-centre) 39th Indian Infantry Division, 6th Armoured Division, the 5th Indian Division, 26th Indian Infantry and 4th Indian Division; (top right) 14th and 9th Indian Infantry Divisions; (middle-left) 31st Indian Armoured Division, 19th and 20th Indian Infantry Divisions; (middle-centre) 17th Indian Infantry Division; (middle-right) 25th Indian Infantry, 8th Indian Infantry and the 6th Infantry Division (India); (bottom-left) 3rd Indian Infantry Division (Chindits); (bottom-centre) unidentified Infantry Division, XIV Army, and 11th Infantry Division; (bottom right) 7th Indian Infantry.
