REEL 1 Background in Scarborough and Derbyshire, GB, 1938-1953: family; education. Aspects of enlistment and training with HMS Ganges, Shotley, GB, 1953-1954: enlistment in Royal Navy, 1953; nature of treatment of recruits by staff; question of effect of treatment; boy seamen who ran away. Recollections of period as seaman aboard HMS Comet in Mediterranean, 1954-1956: at anchor in Malta; poverty of Maltese; appearance of 'The Gut', Malta; interception of National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) gun runners off Cyprus; conditions in Bay of Naples, Italy; visit to brothel in Naples, Italy; patrols off Port Said, Egypt during Suez Crisis, 1956; jobs in gun turret; character of Gibraltar.
