REEL 1 Background in Howden, GB, 1924-1942: family; education; employment; membership of 2nd (Brough) Bn East Riding Home Guard in Howden. Aspects of enlistment and training as private with 4th Bn Lincolnshire Regt, 146th Infantry Bde, 49th (West Riding) Infantry Div in GB, 1943: enlistment, 1/1943; basic training at Lincoln; posting to unit at Hereford; death of soldier during training at Inveraray; issue of bicycles at Kessingland; in transit camp at Lewes; reaction to hearing of D-Day landings, 6/6/1944; embarking at Newhaven, 9/6/1944. Recollections of operations as private with D Coy, 4th Bn Lincolnshire Regt, 146th Infantry Bde, 49th (West Riding) Infantry Div in Normandy, France, 6/1944-1945: landing in Normandy, 10/6/1944; discovery of dead airborne troops during patrol; attack on Fontenay-le-Pesnel, 7/1944; loss of friend Private Jim Robinson at Troarn, 6/8/1944; hospitalisation for septic insect bites at Bayeux.
