REEL 1 Background in Budapest, Hungary, 1932-1945: family; education. Recollections of period as schoolchild during Siege of Budapest, 12/1944- 2/1945: his job as schoolboy auxiliary; Soviet Air Force bombing of family home, 1/1945; living in basement; foraging for food and drink; initial appearance of Soviet Army troops; clearing away bombs and corpses after Soviet take-over, 2/1945; behaviour of Soviet Army troops, 1945. Aspects of period as schoolchild in Budapest, Hungary, 1945-1948: inflationary situation and bartering, 1945-1947; Hungarian Working People's Party take-over of regime, 12/6/1948; influence of previous Bela Kun Communist regime on parents' attitudes; nationalisation of school, 1948; arrests after 1948. REEL 2 Continues: family's standard of living, 1945-1950.
