REEL 1 Background in Küstrin, Germany, 1920-1939: family; education; enlistment in Polish Navy, 1937. Recollections of operations as officer with the Polish Navy in Poland, 9/1939-10/1939: assignment to infantry role in machine gun unit; contrast in tactics employed by German and Soviet forces; treatment of Soviet prisoner of war; surrender to German forces, 10/1939. Aspects of period as prisoner of war in Oflag II-B, Arnswalde, Germany, 1939-1941: initial treatment prisoners of war received from Germans; conditions in camp; effect of arrival of French prisoners of war, 6/1940-7/1940; reasons for transfer to Oflag IV-C at Colditz Castle. Recollections of period as prisoner of war in Oflag IV-C, Colditz Castle, Germany, 1941-1942: journey to camp; impressions of camp; teaching British prisoners of war German language; work as look out; prisoner of war morale; social activities.
