British stretcher-bearer served with 39th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, 13th (Western) Div in GB, Gallipoli, Turkey and Mesopotamia, 1/1915-11/1918

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Dorsetshire and Glamorganshire, GB, 1894-1914: work as farm labourer; Boy Scout Movement activities. Aspects of enlistment and training as private with 9th (Service) Bn Welsh Regt, 58th Bde, 19th (Western) Div in GB, 8/1914-12/1914: recruitment to battalion at Neath, 6/8/1914; start of service at Cardiff, 8/1914; move to Park House Camp, Salisbury Plain, 9/1914-12/1914 including living conditions, training and relations with NCOs. Aspects of training as stretcher-bearer with Royal Army Medical Corps at Tidworth Military Hospital, GB, 12/1914: volunteering to train as stretcher-bearer; roles of four man stretcher bearing team; first aid training. Aspects of period as stretcher-bearer to 39th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, 13th (Western) Div at Tidworth Camp and Torquay, GB, 1/1915-7/1915: organisation of unit; training. REEL 2 Continues: receiving news of posting to Gallipoli, Turkey; send off from civilians in Torquay civilians and voyage out from GB to Mudros, Lemnos Island, Greece, 7/1915-8/1915. Recollections of operations as stretcher-bearer with 39th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, 13th (Western) Div at Gallipoli, Turkey, 8/1915-1/1916: landing at A Beach, Suvla Bay, 7/8/1915; working in two man strecher teams between Chocolate Hill and A Beach, 8/1915-12/1915; collecting casualties from regimental first aid posts; techniques and problems of stretcher bearing; question of number of journeys made; personal morale; food and water rations; washing, appearance and medical hygiene; lice problem. REEL 3 Continues: fly problem; latrines; prevalence of dysentery; parcels and letter contacts with GB; relations with other ranks, NCOs and officers; sniping; artillery fire; effects of cold, 11/1915; evacuation to Lemnos Island, Greece, 12/1915; period at Cape Helles, 12/1915-1/1916. Recollections of period as sick bay attendant and stretcher-bearer with 39th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, 13th (Western) Div in Mesopotamia, Ottoman Turkey, 1916-1918: move to Mesopotamia, 1916; precautions against heat; methods of treating heat stroke, desert sores, dysentery, sandfly fever and malaria; living conditions.
