REEL 1 Background in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, GB and Australia, 1907-1931: family background; emigration from GB to Australia, 1928; experiences as unemployed immigrant in Melbourne, Australia; imprisonment for stowing away on ship to return to GB, 1931. Aspects of period as member of Cheetham Hill Branch of the Communist Party of Great Britain in Manchester, GB, 1931-1936: joining Communist Party of Great Britain; political influences; trade union and anti-Fascist activities. Aspects of joining International Bdes in GB and journey to Spain, 10/1936-11/1936: decision on to go to Spain; initial rejection, 10/1936; recruitment, 11/1936; memories of volunteers from Manchester; problems faced by volunteers in Paris, France. REEL 2 Continues: arrival in Spain.
