REEL 1 Background in Paddington, London, GB, 1917-1939: family; education; employment. Aspects of period as private with Territorial Army in GB, 1934-1939: training with 9th (County of London) Bn London Regt, move to 1st Bn Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regt, 1937; contrast between London and provincial Territorial Army units. Recollections of operations with 1st Bn Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regt, 14th Infantry Bde, 3rd Indian Infantry Div during Second Chindit Expedition Operation Thursday in Burma, 2/1944-6/1944: nature of jungle training; Chindit morale; airlift to Aberdeen Landing Zone; Japanese air attacks; march from Aberdeen Landing Zone to Lake Indawgyi; contact with fauna in jungle; size of column; conditions in jungle; morale of Chindits in Burma and receiving news of death of Major-General Orde Wingate; arrival at Lake Indawgyi and orders not to drink; attack on Japanese railway line; period in reserve during ambush on Japanese 18th Infantry Div at Kyunsalai Pass; character of expedition; lack of sleep; reaction to waiting to attack; contact with Chinese troops.
