Image: A full-length portrait of a young soldier sitting in a chair. He is bear-chested, wearing a pair of Khaki-coloured shorts and a black beret. He holds a spanner in his right hand.

Physical description

Painting adhered to a board that is, in turn, adhered to a window mount. The edges of the painting are visible. Framed for loan.

Label

Procktor was commissioned to document the work of the British Forces in Belize. A former British Colony, Belize became an independent member of the Commonwealth on the 21st September 1981. Following independence the British forces, consisting of representation from the Amy and Navy, remained in the country for a number of reasons. The main motivation for their presence was to protect the country against external territorial aggression, predominantly territorial claims from Guatemala who did not formally recognise Belize. They were also to train the Belize Defence Force and to help in the event of a hurricane or natural disaster. Procktor was sent to Belize with the aim of recording various aspects of military life in what was seen as a unique and unusual setting for the British military at the time, his main focus to be predominantly the jungle and jungle camps and the operations on the border, however in the end the dominant subject matter of Prockter's work in Belize consisted of portraits of various members of the armed services.
