- Description
- A rectangular white marble tablet set on brackets and with a plain base , surmounted by an off white low relief depiction of a cannon on a gun carriage above which is a furled flag with a wreath . Below the tablet is a heraldic shield probably with the arms of the Sotheby family . All this is set on a black marble back board with straight edges at bottom and sides which curve inwards to form a shallow point at the top .The inscription is incised and coloured black .

- /TO THE MEMORY OF/GEORGE MAGUIRE WELLINGTON SOTHEBY,/LIEUTENANT IN THE REGIMENT OF BENGAL ARTILLERY, /ONLY SON OF THE LATE /GEORGE HALL SOTHEBY ESQRE CAPT.34TH REGT M.L.I. /A YOUTH OF MUCH PROMISE, /WHO IN HASTENING TO JOIN HIS REGIMENT /SUFFERED AN UNTIMELY DEATH AMONGST THE MARTYRS IN THE /CALAMITOUS MASSACRE AT CAWNPORE IN JUNE 1857./IN THE 19TH YEAR OF HIS AGE/A BEREAVED MOTHER SORROWING ,BUT NOT WITHOUT HOPE,/INSCRIBES THIS MEMORIAL,AND ADDS/"I SHALL GO TO HIM ,BUT HE SHALL NOT RETURN TO ME"/GEORGE HALL SOTHEBY,ESQRE/CAPTAIN IN THE 34TH REGT MADRAS LIGHT INFANTRY. /DEPARTED THIS LIFE AT HYDERABAD IN THE EAST INDIES/ON THE 14TH MARCH 1838/IN THE 34TH YEAR OF HIS AGE./"WITH ALL JOY AND PEACE IN BELIEVING"/
