Description
Land was bought as a backdrop to the fountain, erected to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The gardens were opened on 21 June 1897 - to be known as the Queen Victoria Gardens. After WW1 the gardens were enclosed with the low wall and railings, and the WW1 Memorial erected within. They appear to have been known as the Memorial Gardens thereafter. In 2004 they were refurbished. The inscribed stone in the front wall was installed as part of the refurbishment. and was rededication on 8 May 2004. The railings (removed in WW2) were replaced at a later date. Contains WMR 18513, WMR 78735 and WMR 78736
