IN LOVING MEMORY OF/JAMES JOHNSTON STEWART, CAPTAIN ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS/BORN APRIL 1ST 1871/KILLED IN ACTION AT CUMBURRU, SOMALILAND APRIL 17TH 1903/WHEN SERVING IN THE 2ND BATT KINGS AFRICAN RIFLES/HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE NORTH WEST FRONTIER OF INDIA CAMPAIGN 189?/IN THE ASHANTI CAMPAIGN 1900 AND IN TYHE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1901-2/WAS FOUR TIMES MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES AND RECEIVED MEDALS WITH CLASPS/DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI/AND THUS THIS MAN DIED LEAVING HIS DEATH FOR AN EXAMPLE OF A NOBLE COURAGE/AND A MEMORIAL OF VIRTUE NOT ONLY UNTO YOUNG MEN BUT UNTO ALL HIS NAMES/"I THANK MY GOD UPON EVERY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU"
