- North Wales Live - 4 November 2-010- Updated 18 April 2013 www.dailypost.co.uk/news/local-news/armistice-reached-over-brynrefail-plaque-2740216-Armistice reached over Brynrefail plaque row-PEACE has finally been declared after a long-running row about the display of war memorial plaques. The brother of a Brynrefail man who died in the Second World War has spent the past three years battling for the plaques, which commemorate members of the Methodist Capel Brynrefail congregation who died in that conflict and the Great War, to be put on public display. Malcolm Jones, 76, lost his brother, Robert Kenneth Jones in Burma in 1944. ADVERTISING Ads by Teads The plaque remembering his sacrifice and those of others in the village was on display in the chapel. However, the chapel was sold nearly three years ago and has since been converted into flats. Since the sale the memorials have been stored at a stonemason’s yard in nearby Llanrug by church members. A chapel spokesman confirmed last year that the memorial would go back on display at Y Caban, another site in the Snowdonia village, where the congregation now meets, but, more than a year later, the plaques remain under wraps. In the interim, Llanberis firm Lake Properties, who converted the chapel into flats, stepped in and erected a copy of the memorial at the site of the converted chapel, in time for this year’s Armistice Day ceremonies. A delighted Mr Jones expressed his “heartfelt thanks” to the firm for its generosity and restoring the plaques to public view. But, he expressed fury at the ongoing delay which has kept the original memorial out of sight. Capel Brynrefail secretary Gwyn Hefin Jones said he was unable to give an exact date as to when the original memorial plaques would go back up on display. “The final restoration work is being carried out by the stonemason on the memorial plaques and we as a church have asked an architect to design a suitable foundation and cover for when the plaques go on display at Y Caban. “It is in the hands of the architect just now but, these things do take time.” He said he had “no objection” to copies of the plaques going on display on the former Methodist chapel building. Mr Jones said a two-minutes silence will be observed on Armistice Day at the site of the newly erected memorial from 11am, all are welcome to pay their respects on the day, although there will not be an “official ceremony”.
