IN COMMEMORATION OF THE LIFE AND WORK OF/ FLIGHT LIEUTENANT/ RONALD VIVIAN ECCLESTONE. D.F.C. A.F.C./ A FORMER PUPIL OF THIS SCHOOL/ AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS IN WORLD WAR II/ HE RECEIVED THE KINGS COMMENDATION/ FOR VALUABLE SERVICES IN THE AIR IN 1949/ AND IN AUGUST 1951, BECAME THE FIRST/ ROYAL AIR FORCE PILOT TO PIERCE THE SOUND BARRIER/ BEING DECORATED WITH THE AIR FORCE CROSS/ IN MARCH 1953./ HE WAS KILLED ON 14th JULY 1954, WHILE TESTING/ THE PROTOTYPE HANDLEY PAGE "VICTOR" AIRCRAFT
