History
In 1989 the cross was reset into a concrete base, the undergrowth was cleared and canopy repaired. The lettering on the tablet was also re-cut. // When first erected in 1917, the memorial included a figure of Christ Crucified, beneath which was a Roll of Honour of the names of those who had so far died. At that time, the War was still in progress, so the Roll was temporary in nature. On an unestablished date, the original Roll was replaced by a stone on which all the casualties' names were engraved. (As it is improbable that the figure of Christ would have been removed at that time; the date that it was later removed is unestablished).

  • Swinton & Mexborough Times Saturday 4th August 1917 reported: 'War Shrine; Darfield Squire's Gift. A solemn service was conducted in Middlewood Avenue on Saturday afternoon by the Rev. H. M Wellington, Vicar of South Kirkby, when a war shrien containing the names of those Darfield soldiers and sailors who have made the great sacrifice was unveiled. The shrine is a wooden structure, standing about four feet out of the ground, with a representation of our Saviour on the Cross, and immediately underneath is a Roll of Honour containing the names of those who have fallen. Mr C. H. Taylor, of Middlewood Hall, is the donor of the shrine, and it has been erected in a very suitable place near to Shroggs Head Green. The relatives of the departed heroes were asked to attend the ceremony, and all who were able put in an appearance. The proceedings were opened with prayer, followed by the Hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers." Th Rev H. M. Wellington gave a very impressive address, and in dedicating the shrine to the memory of the gallant lads who had fallen he impressed upon his hearers the special need for concentrated prayers, the combination of spiritual strength and physical force being necessary in order to lead them to victory. At the close the hymn for absent friends, "Holy Father" was sung'.
