Description
On a board a brass figure in armour with his hands together in prayer, with the Clare family coat of arms above the engraved figure. There was a tablet with the dedicatory inscription written by Earl of Surry but it is now missing.
Inscription
Epitaphium Thome Clere, qui/ fato functus est 1545, auctore/ HENRICO HOWARD, comite Surry/ in cujus felicis ingenii specimen, &/ singularis facundiae argumetum,/ appensa fuit haec tabala per/ W. HOWARD, ilium Thomae nuper/ Ducis Norfolciensis, filii ejusdem/ HENRICI Comitis/ Norfolke sprung thee, Lambeth holds thee dead,/ Clere of the Count of Cleremont thou hight!/ Within the wombe of Ormond's race though bred,/ And Sawest thy cosin crowned in thy sight./ Shelton, for love, Surrey for Lord thou chase,/ Aye me! While life did last, that league was tender,/ Tracing whose steps thoug sawest Kelsall blase,/ Laundersey burnt, and batter'd Bulleyn render/ At Muttrell gates, hopeless of all recure,/ Thine Earle, halfe head, gave in they hand his will,/ Which cause did thee this pining death procure,/ Ere summers four times seven thou could fulfull./ Aye, Clere, if love had booted care or cost,/ Heaven had not wonne, nor earth to timely lost.
