The impressive ceremony of unveiling the memorial to the three members of the Midlothian Constabulary who sacrificed their lives in the war, took place at the Police Station, Dalkeith, on Friday last (Armistice Day). Major Sholto W. Douglas, D S.O, Chief Constable, presided over a large and representative gathering, which included Sir Robert Usher, who unveiled the memorial, Sir John Don Wanchope, Lady Usher, Rev. Wm. A. Dunnett, RD., O.B.E., who his uniform as Chaplain to the Constabulary, Provost Murdoch, Bailie Doughty, Bailie MacGregor, Mr Jas Ross, ex-Provost Alison, Mr F. Foreman, Provost C K. Sturrock, Mr Jas McDougal, and Mr Anderson, Craigieloch, Liatrathen, Forfarshire ; Mr and Mrs Vickers, Portobello; and Mr John Porteous, Edinburgh (relatives of deceased soldiers). A strong muster of the Midlothian Constabulary, to the number of about 70, under Deputy Chief-Constable Fraser, M.B.E., and Inspectors Robertson, Steele and Scott, was drawn up round the memorial. The men, who wore their decorations, presented a very smart appearance". The report described the ceremony in detail, quoting the speeches made, including that of Sir Robert Usher who unveiled the memorial. Mention was made that "at the outbreak of war the strength of the Midlothian Constabulary was 100. Of these 28 joined the forces, and 3 made the supreme sacrifice". The memorial, described as having been "supplied and erected by Mr John Monteith, Dalkeith", was stated to be "of a dove coloured Italian marble tablet, at the top of which is the badge of the Midlothian Constabulary", and the inscription as being "in letters of gold". www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0002714/19211117/024/0002
