- Description
- Sandstone Celtic cross with slender shaft decorated in the Celtic style, widening out at the bottom to carry the inscriptions, and set on a three-step base within a gravelled kerbed enclosure. The figure of the church's patron, St Michael, is depicted on the East face of the shaft, treading down Evil, in the form of snakes, and stabbing them with his spear. Various Christian symbol appear on the West face of the shaft. The WW1 names are on the East face, and the WW2 on the West face. The inscriptions are carved.

- Buildings of England series by Various Cumbria (2010) p.399 'Excellent design of 1919 by W.G. Collingwood, based on his antiquarian researches, executed by Barbara Collingwood, his daughter. Cross in red sandstone modelled on that at Gosforth, though not so attenuated. St George, looking very Viking, is entangled in the dragon's coils which have turned into interlace, but manages to spear its gaping mouth by his foot.'
