- TWO-STEPPED SQUARE BASE SURMOUNTED BY PLINTH, PEDESTAL AND FIGURE OF A SERVICE STANDING IN PRESENT ARMS POSITION. INSCRIPTION ON BRONZE PLAQUES ATTACHED TO THE SIDES OF THE PEDESTAL DEWSBURY COAT OF ARMS ON THE SE FACE; YORKSHIRE DRAGOONS INSIGNIA ON THE NE FACE; KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY BADGE ON THE NW FACE; ST JOHN AMBULANCE BADGE ON THE SW FACE. SERVICEMAN WEARS AN SLOUCH HAT, TUNIC JACKET AND TROUSERS WITH PUTEES. HIS RIFLE IS HELD IN THE ADVANCE POSITION. HE HAS A FULL BANDOLIER, ROLLED UP BLANKET ATTACHED BEHIND HIS WAIST, A SMALL PACKET SUSPENDED AT HIS LEFT SIDE AND A WATER BOTTLE ON HIS RIGHT

- 6 O'CLOCK FACE: THIS STATUE WAS ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE/ THE PATRIOTISM OF THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF/ THE AUXILIARY FORCES AND ST JOHN AMBULANCE/ BRIGADE OF DEWSBURY AND DISTRICT WHO/ SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN/ WAR 1899 - 1902 AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO/ LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THE CAMPAIGN 3, 9 AND 12 O'CLOCK FACES: (NAMES) The model for the statue was Leonard Crane, who served in the South African War and was killed in action during World War 1, October 1916
