Description
Three-stepped square base surmounted by plinth and obelisk. Inscription is on the faces of the plinth. Information board is affixed next to the obelisk.

Face one: VIVIT POST FUNERA VIRTUS/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ OFFICERS AND MEN/ OF THE CITY AND COUNTY OF/ NOTTINGHAM/ WHO VOLUNTARILY AND PATRIOTICALLY/ GAVE THEIR SERVICES TO THE/ COUNTRY DURING THE/ SOUTH AFRICAN WAR/ 1899 - 1902,/ AND WHO LOST THEIR LIVES WHILE/ NOBLY PERFORMING THEIR DUTY./ THE NAMES OF ALL ARE/ RECORDED HEREON WITH THE/ REGIMENTS TO WHICH THEY/ WERE ATTACHED./ FOR QUEEN, KING AND COUNTRY./ UNVEILED 26TH MARCH 1903 BY/ GEN LORD METHUEN, KCB. KCVO, GCB, CB, CMG. PRESENTED TO/ THE CITY OF NOTTINGHAM/ BY/ THOMAS ISAAC BIRKIN, JP, DL Other faces: (Names) Information board: THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED IN HONOUR OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE BOER (OR AFRICAN) WAR IN THE 1890s. THE FOUR SIDES LIST FOUR DIFFERENT GROUPS OF SOLDIERS IT WAS ORIGINALLY ERECTED AT THE BOTTOM OF KING STREET BUT WAS MOVED HERE IN 1927 WHEN IT WAS GETTING IN THE WAY OF THE NEW TROLLEY BUSES. THE OBELISK AND ITS SUPPORTS ARE MADE OF RED GRANITE.
