Alys Cundy was awarded her doctorate in 2014. A collaboration with the University of Bristol, her research project investigated the Imperial War Museum’s display practices over nearly a century in existence. Since its formation in 1917 IWM has been significant in representing the changing face of warfare in the twentieth century. However, there had not been a comprehensive history of the museum. Drawing on IWM institutional archives and interviews with former and current members of staff, alongside press coverage of the museum throughout its history, the project investigated how the museums diverse collections have been displayed for the public. It considered how displays have responded to internal and external pressures, as well as to evolving museum philosophies and shifting memories of and attitudes towards war.
