Project Description

This community history project started out by researching the stories of one hundred and eighty two names on the First World War memorial located in St Mary's Church, Summerstown (Tooting, London), alongside the impact of the conflict on the local area. Our promotional project activities included guided walks, talks, exhibitions and collaboration with partner organisations. We then received Heritage Lottery funding between 2016-17, working in partnership with the charity 'Big Up Films'. Over its entire duration, the project involved hundreds of local people, won three consecutive Wandsworth Borough Council 'Civic Awards' and featured high profile events such as putting up a plaque to Sidney Lewis, the youngest British soldier during the conflict.
