Project Description

The Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk developed various activities leading up to Remembrance Sunday 2018 to help our community mark the one hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War, with elements designed to both generate understanding and pay tribute to the sacrifices of those who served and suffered. The Maritime Commemoration held in Lowestoft on 7th October 2018 was the first of these events. By this time Lowestoft Town Council was creating a memorial poppy shaped garden, which was formally opened as part of proceedings. The Ceremony Guest of Honour was Vice Admiral Sir Jonathan Woodcock, KCB. A parade made its way through the town, arriving at Belle Vue Park via Cart Score, then forming around the Poppy Memorial Garden area in order to undertake a Dedication Ceremony. The garden was adorned with over three thousand knitted poppies, which has been created by ‘Poppies by the Sea’. Following the Dedication of the Memorial Garden, guests and the parade moved to surround the Royal Navy Patrol Service Memorial where a Service of Commemoration - including a two minute silence and wreath-laying - took place. With its commemorative benches, the Garden now remains open for all to take time to reflect and enjoy the surroundings of the historic Park.
