Project Description
The initial intention of this commemorative project was to discover the identities of the men listed on the Chalford memorial, which covers several local villages in Gloucestershire, as part of '156 Men, 156 Stories'. This expanded into a more general investigation into the character of the surrounding area during the First World War. There were originally two members of the project team, but we grew to six over the course of our research. We held several exhibitions, produced a book, and linked with other local history groups in forming part of the 'Five Valleys Great War Researchers Group' (all looking at the impact of the conflict in the Stroud Valleys). Our project initiatives were mostly self-funded.
