Headstone: "OUR JIMMY"/ BORN ON THE SOMME JUNE 1916/ MASCOT OF THE 1ST SCOTTISH/ RIFLES, DIED MAY 10TH 1943/ BOUGHT BY MRS HEATH IN 1920/ TO GIVE HIM A GOOD HOME/ AND TO PROMOTE INTEREST IN/ THE R.S.P.C.A. Plaque: JIMMY/ JIMMY WAS A DONKEY THAT SERVED IN/ THE ARMY ON THE BATTLEFIELDS OF FRANCE/ IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR./ BORN ON THE SOMME IN 1916, HE WAS/ ADOPTED AS AN UNOFFICIAL MASCOT BY/ THE 1ST BATTALION SCOTTISH RIFLES./ WOUNDED SEVERAL TIMES, HE BECAME/ THE ONLY DONKEY TO RECEIVE A MILITARY/ DECORATION. JIMMY WAS DEMOBILISED/ IN 1919 AND BROUGHT BACK TO/ PETERBOROUGH WHERE HE SPENT/ THE REST OF HIS DAYS.
