Description
Large rough hewn cemeted cairn surrounded by iron railings- by 2018 these railings have been removed. Grave markers are placed on the battlefield site marking the various sites where battle dead were buried. Note that in Spring 2008 a new Visitor Centre opened at the site. A whole elevation of the centre has been built as a memorial. At one end of the wall a stone protrudes from the wall for each Jacobite man killed (approx. 1,250), there is then a dividing section of flush wall, and then at the other end of the wall is a protruding stone for each Government man killed (50). There is also an explanatory stone tablet. The stones do not have names on. The Visitor Centre cost c £9 million.
