NOWY-HEADED POLISHED STONE TABLET WITH CORNICE AND CARVED INSCRIPTION COLOURED COAT OF ARMS AT THE TOP AND COLOURED REGIMENTAL BADGE FLANKED BY LAUREL BRANCHES AT THE BASE

IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ CLAUDE NICHOLSON/ 16TH THE QUEEN'S LANCERS/ BRIGADIER 30TH INFANTRY BRIGADE/ WHOSE HEROIC DEFENCE OF CALAIS 22ND TO 26TH MAY 1940/ AGAINST OVERWHELMING NUMBERS OF THE ENEMY DID MUCH/ TO SECURE THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE BRITISH ARMY FROM/ THE BEACHES OF DUNKIRK. WITH THE REMNANTS OF HIS/ BRIGADE HE WAS TAKEN PRISONER AND DIED THREE YEARS/ LATER ON THE 27TH OF JUNE 1943 IN OFLAG 1XAZ AT ROTENBURG GERMANY/ AT THE AGE OF 44 YEARS./ HE WAS THE ELDER SON OF RICHARD AND VIOLET NICHOLSON/ OF WOODCOTT IN THE COUNTY OF SOUTHAMPTON AND NEPHEW/ OF MARY RIDLEY OF MAPERTON HOUSE WHICH WAS TO HIM/ A SECOND HOME./ HIS BODY RESTS IN HOLY GROUND AT ROTENBURG AN DER FULDA./ HIS SOUL IS WITH GOD
