- IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ CLAUDE NICHOLSON/ 16TH THE QUEEN'S LANCERS/ BRIGADIER 30TH INFANTRY BRIGADE/ WHOSE HEROIC DEFENCE OF CALAIS 22ND TO 26TH MAY 1940/ AGAINST OVERWHELMING NUMBERS OF THE ENEMY DID MUCH/ TO SECURE THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE BRITISH ARMY FROM/ THE BEACHES OF DUNKIRK. WITH THE REMNANTS OF HIS/ BRIGADE HE WAS TAKEN PRISONER AND DIED THREE YEARS/ LATER ON THE 27TH OF JUNE 1943 IN OFLAG 1XAZ AT ROTENBURG GERMANY/ AT THE AGE OF 44 YEARS./ HE WAS THE ELDER SON OF RICHARD AND VIOLET NICHOLSON/ OF WOODCOTT IN THE COUNTY OF SOUTHAMPTON AND NEPHEW/ OF MARY RIDLEY OF MAPERTON HOUSE WHICH WAS TO HIM/ A SECOND HOME./ HIS BODY RESTS IN HOLY GROUND AT ROTENBURG AN DER FULDA./ HIS SOUL IS WITH GOD
