History note
Volunteering to serve in August of 1914, Albert Baker enlisted with the 1/5th (City of London) Battalion, The London Regiment ('London Rifle Brigade') at the age of 18. By the time of his being killed in action on the Western Front Lance Corporal Baker's battalion was part of 169th Brigade of the 56th Division (TF). Throughout September 1916 the Battalion was in action facing Combles, south-east of Guillemont, fighting from trenches south of Leuze Wood, on the right flank of the advance to take Ginchy. Throughout that period they had participated in night-time bombing attacks and daylight trench assaults but were repeatedly stifled by stubborn resistance until finally taking Combles Trench on 26 September (the Battle of Morval). L/Cpl Baker died as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest.
