On Empire Day, 1943, Sir John Waddington, Governor of Northern Rhodesia, laid the foundation stone of a new Military Hospital at Lusaka, for Africans. Colonel Steele, Commander of the Southern Sub Area, handed a trowel made of local wood and copper to Sir John for the ceremony. In his speech Sir John said that the new hospital was an example of military and civilian co-operation and had been built with a view to civil requirements when the war was over. He hoped that peace would see expansion of health services and that the new hospital would provide a career for demobilised soldiers and raising generation of Africans.
