Photographs covering the service career of Captain Conrad Thomas Price MBE, MC with the 2nd Battalion, The Norfolk Regiment in Mesopotamia, 1916 - 1919. Included are photographs covering the crossing of the River Tigris at Shumran Bend on 23 February 1917 and the subsequent day of fighting on the Dahra Ridge. Also, images of outposts held by the 2nd Norfolks near the Diyala river and No.14 Platoon advancing in action near Baqubah in 1917. Other photographs show general scenes in and around Amara, Baghdad, Basra, Ashar Creek and Nazariyah. One sequence of photographs shows Russian troops at Baqubah in 1917. Other subjects depcited include river transport (both military and local), landmarks such as the Ctesiphon Arch, Ezra's Tomb and the Garden of Eden and railway locomotives. A number of officers and other ranks are recorded by name in either individual or portrait photographs. These include: Conrad Price (at home in 1916 and in Mesopotamia), Dr Evans (RAMC), Captains Horner and Keighley, Lieutenant Joy, 2nd Lieutenants Child, Daniel, Farquharson, Kenny, Richardson, Selwyn and Woodyer, Chaplain Martyndale, J McD Heath, Paisley, Cozens, Marsham, Sergenat Scarfe and Private Payne.
The album also contains a number of interesting documents:
1. List of the men in No.5 Boat under Price for the crossing of the Tigris at Shumran Bend (23 February 1917) - Lance Corporal Nicholls and Privates Woodhouse, Gould, Elwood, Hensby, Watts, Dent, Mays, Wootton.
2. Copy of telegram sent home to his family on 28 February 1917.
3. Letter to Price from Lieutenant Colonel Jones-Bateman written on 27 June 1917 from a rest camp at Baghdad whilst travelling for leave in India. The letter thanks Price for purchasing items and mentions a successful day's fishing.
4. Programmes for a race meeting at the Baghdad Sporting Club (14 March 1918) and the Baghdad Horse Show (March 1918).
5. Programme for a Grand Concert given by the 2nd Norfolks at Karnabit (18 August 1917).
6. Various press cuttings relating to the Campaign in Mesoptamia and officers known to Price.
7. Menu card - Persian Gulf Farewell Dinner, HMT Miltiades, 26 May 1916, signed by Price and other officers.
8. Drawn design by Price for the Shaikh Saad Football League Medal (note states the final was won by the 2nd Norfolks at a match played at the Citadel in Baghdad).
Physical description
Maroon coloured cloth covered album (dimensions: 230mm x 280mm), edges badly worn and spine covering missing. The album contains 109 black and white photographic prints (dimensions between: 65mm x 45mm & 105mm x 80mm) glued to pages. The album also contains newspaper cuttings and documents, most of which are also glued to the pages.
