Collection of photographic material relating to the service of Major K D P Murray with Nos. 3, 10 and 52 Squadrons during the First World War. The photographs include aerial views (verticle and oblique) of locations on Western Front: Albert; Amiens; Arneke; Audenarde-sur-L'Escaut (14 November 1918); Brasso Redoubt near Peronne (10 February 1917); Elzenwalle Chateau; Cassel; Chocques - including site of aerodrome used by No.10 Squadron between 1915 - 1917; Gheluwe; Ghent; Haut Allaines (near Peronne); Hindenburg Line near Flesquieres (30 April 1917); Hinges (XI Corps HQ 1915 - 1917); Kemmel; La Bassee; Marcoing (4 June 1917); Menin Road (looking towards Menin and near Gheluvelt); Moislains chalk pit (27 December 1916); Peckham Crater; Peronne (9 February 1917); Polderhoek Chateau; Potijze; St Denis (German aerodrome); Wytschaete; Ypres, Zillebeke Lake; January 1918; bombardment during the Battle of Messines (June 1917); heavy German gun position near Staden, 22 May 1918; trench mortar school near Setques , 21 August 1918; entry of GOC XIX Corps into Courtrai (28 October 1918); two French oblique aerial photographs showing an infantry attack on the Somme on Christmas Day 1916 and the blockships at Ostend and Zeebrugge after the raids in April and May 1918. There are also vertical stereoscopic pairs covering: Grandcourt (1916); Beaucourt-sur-Ancre (1916); Bullecourt (1917); Pozieres (1916); Thiepval (1916).
Front line photographs takern near Pys and Warlencourt on the Somme during March 1917 by Eric Donaldson.
A series of photographs covering aircraft and personnel of No.52 Squadron on the Somme during 1916 - 1917: Major Leonard Parker (killed 7 January 1917 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery); Lt Rayner; 2nd Lt F W Saunders (killed 25 January 1918 whilst serving with No.35 Squadron and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery), Stovel, Lines, Wright, Nicholls and Galbraith; Flt Sgt Leech. Photographed as crews in RE 8s of the squadron are: Lt Henry Collister Mulock (killed 15 February 1917 and buried in Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte) and Mackay (no details) / Captain G C Rogers MC (died of wounds 30 October 1917 and buried in Zuydcoote Military Cemetery) and Allbutt (no details). There is also a photograph of Captain Rogers' grave. Also view of the squadron's aerodrome and a casualty clearing station (CCS) at Meaulte and aerial views of RE 8 aircraft.
The collection also includes photographs relating to 81st Wing (RAF): group photograph of staff (officers and other ranks) and the HQ building at Tourcoing.
Photographs, including crashed aircraft taken at Doncaster. Also a portrait of Johnny Milne in training at Doncaster (note in the album states that Milne was killed at Dixmude in October 1917).
Photograph of Murray taken whilst flying over Loos at 8000ft in August 1915.
The collection also includes a head and shoulders portrait photograph of Captain Gilbert William Mapplebeck DSO (killed 24 August 1915 and buried in Streatham Cemetery).
Physical description
One photograph album lacking front cover with black and white photographic prints glued to album pages, no captions. Two Army Book 129 foolscap lined paper notebooks used as photograph albums, one with blue card covers and damaged spine, the second lacking a cover. Prints are glued to album pages (a small number of prints have become detached) handwritten captions are included on many of the album pages. Also one folded 1:10,000 scale First World War trench map: Zillebeke; 17 photographic prints of aerial photography instructional diagrams; a card Burchall Photographic Slide Rule and 12 loose black and white photographic prints of varying size.
