Second World War British Ministry of Information newsreel trailer urging the public to not to waste bread.
Full description
The film opens with the character Edward Kelly seated at a dining table greedily eating bread. The commentary declares "They used to say of Edward Kelly, that his eye was bigger than his belly, because he always piled his plate, with more than he could ever eat. Of bread especially he was wasteful, he could not see that it was disgraceful". Four men appear and appeal to Kelly not to waste bread. "His friend said Ned it is wrong of you, to waste your bread the way you do. Don't order two loaves everyday and throw uneaten bread away. It's food you know, you really must not crumble it or leave the crusts. It's bad enough at any time, in times like these it is a crime. Infuriated by his sniggers, his chums produce official figures". The friends show Kelly a poster DON'T WASTE BREAD - IF YOU SAVE HALF A OUNCE EACH DAY YOU FREE 30 SHIPS EACH YEAR" . The commentary continues "A normal man would show disgust, at this sad waste of crumb and crust. Ned was deaf to what they said, and went on madly eating bread. Until one day as they foresaw, the dreaded minions of the law, prepared a rather sinister trap, to nab the horrid little chap." Kelly is seized by two tall men dressed as policewomen. They blow their whistles (sound of a ship's fog horn) and pick him up by his elbows and carry him away "they drag him before the court, which deals with food destroying imbeciles". A judge, wearing his official robes and a long wig, looks down at the prisoner. "You are the kind of moron, who does not know that there's a war on". Kelly standing in the dock flanked by the two "policewomen" looks up at the judge. The commentary concludes "Well if you don't, it's time you did. For wasting bread you're fined a quid. Moral - when food is short you oughtn't, treat your bread as unimportant" The final shot show the judge eating a sandwich with the end caption "EAT IT, BUT DON'T WASTE IT".
