Full description
Three local civilians on pack horses and a fourth leads his horse; as they pass a jeep can be seen parked on the other side of the road. A boy rides a bullock along a verge while leading another; a railway line appears to run alongside the road. A small local hut with fourteen or so people around it, apparently all members of the same family. Closer shot. Local women cross shot left-to-right while a pony-drawn carriage and a jeep with trailer cross shot in the opposite direction. A local thatched building. A broad paved road with civilian traffic; long pan right showing low buildings by the roadside. Pan left from a road lined with trees over a flooded area with raised embankment and houses built on stilts. Three local boys leap off the end of a broken bridge and land with a splash in the river below; tilt to other children in the water. A local roadside stall. Moving shot, presumably taken from a jeep on the Makassar-Maros road, with pedestrian traffic. Entering a built up area (?); parked horse-drawn transport stands at the roadside. A pony heavily laden with fodder. Two more ponies also laden, and a man carrying fodder by means of a yoke. Men read a copy of the Soember Penerangan newspaper pinned on a noticeboard; some seem to take more interest in the camera than the paper. Shot of the paper. Indian military policeman directing traffic. A British and an Australian soldier share a 'tigaroda', a sort of tricycle rickshaw with a front-mounted armchair followed by two more. Shot of a local cafe; faded text appears to read 'New York'. Two local women pass in a tigaroda and one of them covers her face with a piece of paper. A man carrying hens in baskets on a yoke. Sergeant Modd, a still photographer of No. 9 Section, Army Film and Photographic Unit, chats with boys outside Makassar High School during their afternoon break. Students going back into the school building. Two Indian military policemen. Three men pulling handcarts. A tigaroda driver, asleep in his vehicle, wakes up with a start before trying to go back to sleep. Shot of a flooded house, mostly intact but inaccessible; a roof pokes out of the water nearby. Looking down on a crowd of civilians waiting to get signatures on their ration cards. Ground level showing the crowd clamouring for signatures or rations. Rations in baskets or bowls are passed out of a small window. A man stands by a sign reading 'Gang 1B' displaying his ration and his ration card. Close-up.
