IX. Latvians volunteer for Waffen SS. Front page of newspaper Tevija of 4 February 1944 carries appeal for volunteers from Latvian leader General Oskar Dankers. Men with suitcases arrive outside recruiting office; inside they are signed up by soldier already wearing Latvian SS armshield before they are fitted out with boots, uniforms and helmets bearing SS rune markings. Close-up of Latvija armshield. (Presumably 19th Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS rather than 15th raised previous year.)
Object description
X. German aerial reconnaissance photography and shelling of Anzio. Junkers Ju 88 takes off from Italian airfield and makes photographic record of enemy land and sea positions at Anzio bridgehead. Plane lands and photographic magazine is swiftly conveyed by car to Photo Unit (Bildstelle), indicated by humorous cartoon on door of photographer. Developed prints are examined stereoscopically by Obergefreiter and reveal ships sunk off Anzio, airfield at Nettuno, vehicle park and landing craft off Nettuno. German railway gun 28cm K 5 [E] is loaded, raised and fired against Anzio bridgehead; distant explosions are observed by gunners through periscope and by paratroops through binoculars.
Object description
XI. German ground and sea defence of Narva area and anti-tank air strikes on Southern sector. Animated map of Leningrad-Lake Peipus-Narva area. StuG III and snow-suited soldiers seated in trucks pass by to strengthen the Narva sector. Barriers shield the road from snow drifts; horses pulling sledges bear blizzard conditions better than a soldier who retires to a vehicle to light a cigarette. Reconnaissance patrol sets out across snow to check Russian positions around frozen Lake Peipus. German artillery opens up and troops move through woods, returning with Russian prisoners holding hands in air. Russian counterattack, with soldiers visible as specks advancing over frozen lake, is held. German defence is aided by naval bombardment by destroyers in Baltic. Air attacks in south are mounted by Major Rudel, filmed climbing into his Ju 87 and taking off, and by Henschel Hs 129s which destroy several stationary and moving Russian tanks in side-on cannon attacks (clear camera-gun film).
