In March 1943, Appelbee was offered a commission to the value of 50 guineas on the subject of Tank Training. However, for reasons not specified here, he was forced to decline. The possibility of an emergency water tank subject was discussed but did not reach fruition. In May 1945, Appelbee proposed himself for some pictures for a commission on the subject of the "atrocities in Germany". The committee, though interested, were not able to give a commission, but in the same month, he was offered a commission on the subject of returning ex-prisoners of war, for 25 guineas (17) (LD 5166).
In October the same year, a further commission was offered, for a portrait of an eminent scientist, for 50 or 75 guineas depending on size (IWM:ART LD 5744). This picture took a long time to complete and was not delivered until 1947
