Correspondence re: commissions from the IWM and the Ministry of Munitions, to Anna Airy to paint munitions work. Four pictures were commissioned in June 1918, to represent the National Projectile Factory at Hackney (IWM: ART 4032), the National Filling Factory at Chilwell, Nottingham, W G Armstrong Whitworth's at Nottingham (IWM:ART 2272), and the Aircraft Manufacturing Co. at Hendon (IWM: ART 1931). A picture of the South Metropolitan Gas Co (IWM: ART 2852) was also commissioned by the Women's Work Section.
A picture called 'Munition Girls Leaving Work' was commissioned, and submitted to the Committee in May 1919, but was not approved.
Some problems arose over details of the commissions.
The other four pictures finally did not include the Chilwell factory, but rather one of the Singer Factory in Glasgow (IWM: ART 2271).
The file includes catalogue notes for all four pictures, as well as an article about Airy from 'Pearson's Magazine', Oct 1924, and a catalogue from the IWM exhibition 'Some Women Artists', 11 Oct 1958 - 02 Feb 1959.
