Minute book kept by Percy Allen, secretary, for the Leicester branch of the Peace Pledge Union (18 October 1938-18 June 1940), the meetings being held at Uppingham Road Baptist Church to which all the members belonged, recording in good detail the conscientious objections of the members, the activities in which they were involved, pacifist events before the war, publications and talks, communications with HQ, the Peace Petition, their views on the reasons for the move towards war, their answers to mock tribunal questions, discussion of peace plays, registration for conscientious objectors, 'Stop the War' campaign, how best to promote pacifism, comments on the political diplomacy, a report of a visit to a tribunal at Birmingham (8 November 1939) and what to expect, communal living and the groups purchase of an allotment; together with official papers relating to Percy Allen's tribunal and registration as a conscientious objector including the notice of his hearing, his application, a handwritten draft of his statement, notification of the result, his certificates (one provisional) of registration in the register of conscientious objectors, letters relating to his employment and this being a condition of his registration as a CO, character reference letters used in the tribunal and for employment purposes including one from the Reverend D Glan Morgan from Uppingham Road Baptist Church, a letter and notice of his release from National Service under the Release of Conscientious Objectors Act, 1946, a booklet titled 'He Laid down his Life that we might Live' by Merle Eyles which inspired his views and tribunal statement, and official papers relating to his Civil Defence training and Fireguard duties undertaken during the war.
