A ts letter (2pp), with a ts transcription containing additional explanatory notes (2pp), written to his brother-in-law, William ('Bill') Slater, by a Captain in the Intelligence Corps based at Government Headquarters, Hargeisa, British Somaliland, East Africa (20 April 1944), giving descriptions of Berbera on the Gulf of Aden, local wildlife, his work, exasperation with the Somali people, who drive local officials mad, family matters, including his brothers and nephews, and details of sending Somali knives home for his son and nephew. Together with: a Birthday Card written to Ayres from his uncle Charley written from France, 1917; and two printed books (signed and dated by Ayres) designed to help with learning Swahili entitled "Hadithi Za Kiarabu: Swahili Stories - V" (48pp, London, 1942?) edited by A B Hellier MA, and "Vitabu Vidogo Vya Kiswahili: Little Swahili Books, No 2, Passages for Translation, Some Readings" (40pp, London, 1942?), compiled by M H Werner.
