Large autograph book (28pp used) kept by Miss Jean McAlister while working as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse at St. Benedict's Abbey Auxiliary Hospital, Fort Augustus, and Hillhead House Auxiliary Hospital, Glasgow, from 1917 - 1919; includes annotated photographs of other staff and patients, often humorous drawings and poems, and messages of thanks to the nurses for their kindness. Also included in the autograph book is a longer account by Private Charles Clark MM DCM of his service on the Western Front with 199th Company, Machine Gun Corps (49th Division), describing the journey to the front at Ypres and conditions there, the lack of water, dead soldiers and the mud, also mentioning his initial struggle to enlist due to ill health and the circumstances of his drafting to France; together with a loose note written from Private Clark to Miss McAlister while he was a patient at St. Benedict's Abbey Auxiliary Hospital, Fort Augustus.
