[born Alfréd Reinhold] Important collection of papers pertaining to his departure from Hungary for the UK in the mid-1930s as a refugee from the Communist regime, his Second World War service in the British Army (Pioneer Corps and Intelligence Corps) and his key role in the initiation and implementation of the postwar political re-education programme with regard to German prisoners of war in British hands (notably at Kempton Park and other camps in the UK, and Slemdal camp in Norway), comprising: substantial quantity of letters written to him in 1946 – 1947 by German POWs and former POWs who had attended his courses or otherwise come into contact with him while he was a re-education Training Adviser, with associated papers including memoranda on political screening and re-education, POW camp inspection reports etc; handmade volumes of poetry, plays and other works of literature created by him in connection with his re-education work (many with artwork by the subsequently well-known illustrator 'Joki'); camp greetings cards and other ephemera from the period, and a quantity of photographs [see collection contents list].
