12 ms letters (40pp plus two printed attachments) (May - April 1917) written while Lieutenant General Commanding the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), written to Colonel D Rintoul, a housemaster at Clifton College, describing the fighting at Gallipoli and in France, with a printed order (December 1915) and a printed personal message to his troops on the referendum taken in Australia regarding the introduction of conscription (October 1916). Together with: a ts report by Lieutenant General Birdwood to the Chief of the General Staff, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, on the landings of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April 1915, and on the subsequent fighting (6pp, May 1915); a ts report by Birdwood on the German attack on the Australian and New Zealand positions (3pp, May 1915); and a trench map of the Thiepval Wood area of the Somme sector (August 1916). Together with: a ts letter (2pp) to Colonel R A Carruthers concerning his appointment as Birdwood's DA and QMG (November 1914); and three ms letters (6pp) to Major R A Lamprey written while Honorary Colonel of the 75th (Cinque Ports) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, in which Lamprey was serving (November 1942 - January 1943).
