A collection of letters, diaries, and other items (most with transcriptions) relating to his service in the Royal Navy including: letters and postcards written to his parents while a Cadet from the Royal Naval College, Osborne (September - December 1915); a ms diary kept while a Midshipman in HMS WARSPITE (June - December 1918); a diary written while serving in HMS HOOD during the World Cruise of the Special Service Squadron (November 1923 - September 1924), which also includes letters, programmes and other ephemera from the voyage; ms letters written to his sister, Mrs V MacDonald (July 1939 - November 1941); 70 ms letters written to his wife from HMS NELSON (June - December 1940); 17 ms letters to his wife while he was at the Admiralty, the Cabinet War Rooms, and in Liverpool (December 1940 - March 1941); 79 ms letters during his passage out to the Far East and from Singapore (March 1941 - 6 February 1942); 13 ms letters to his wife or mother from various correspondents concerning Atkinson and the circumstances of his death on 15 February 1942 after escaping HMS SULTAN, a shore establishment in Singapore, in ST YIN PING (May 1942 - January 1946); five copies of photographs of Atkinson at various stages during his naval career (1916 - 1941).
