[BASIC ACCESSION RECORD] 675 ms letters between Tony serving with the RAF in the Mediterranean and Joan who was on the Home Front doing voluntary work for the Fire Guard, Land Army and Red Cross, tracing the development of their relationship throughout the Second World War. Together with: a published edition of these letters in association with IWM, entitled 'Dear Joan: Love Letters from the Second World War'; and a ts memoir 'One Man's Life in the RAF, 1939-1946', covering his signing up for the RAFVR in September 1939, selection as a Wireless Operator / Gunner, RAF Uxbridge, training at No 2 Electrical and Wireless School at Yatesbury in Wiltshire, as an Aircraftsman Second Class, Paratroop training in No 1 Paratroop Training School, selection as a pilot, posting to 28 EFTS (Elementary Flying Training School) at Wolverhampton, training in a DH82 Tiger Moth, the journey to the United States to train at Turner Field, Albany, Georgia, and then Royal Canadian Air Force base at Trenton, Ontario, changing back to a Navigator and commission to Pilot Officer straight from AC2, returning to the UK for an holding unit in Harrogate, posting to No 3 School of Reconnaissance at Squires Gate, joining up with pilot Pat Pringle, flying a Beaufighters Mk X, flying to Egypt, then posting to 603 (City of Edinburgh) Fighter Squadron in Libya, descriptions of the base in the desert.
