Photocopies of eighteen ms letters to the Right Reverend Christopher Chavasse, Bishop of Rochester, and five ms letters to Mrs Beatrice Chavasse, parents of Captain Noel Chavasse, one of his personal staff officers, from Montgomery between January 1943 and October 1950, during which time he was GOC-in-C Eighth Army until December 1943, C-in-C Allied Land Forces, North West Europe, until August 1944, C-in-C 21st Army Group until May 1945, Military Governor, British Zone Occupied Germany until September 1945, Chief of the Imperial General Staff from June 1946 until October 1948 and Chairman, Western Union Commanders-in-Chief Committee from November 1948, chiefly concerning Montgomery's opinion of Chavasse's character and the progress in his work as a personal staff liaison officer and ADC to Montgomery between 1943 and 1946 but with interesting, though brief, comments upon the Eighth Army's progress after El Alamein, climatic conditions in Italy in autumn 1943 and his responsibilities and tasks upon taking over as C-in-C Allied Land Forces in 1944 and at the Western Union in 1948.
