Extensive collection of 2617 ms letters exchanged with his fiancée (later wife), Helen, during his service as an Army Chaplain attached to the 1st Derbyshire Yeomanry (6th Armoured Division), 1942 - 1946, covering his postings to Scotland (1942), North Africa (1942 - 1944), Italy (1944 - 1945), Austria (1945 - 1946) and Italy again with HQ RASC (1946), and covering his fiancee's studies at Froebel Teaching College, her evacuation to Knebworth House, Hertfordshire (1942), her teaching posts at Ipswich (1942 - 1944) and West Malling, London (1944) and her work as a driver with the Church Army stationed at Bunwell, Norfolk (1945 - 1946). The correspondence consists mainly of love letters, but there are frequent references to their wartime activities, although with limited comment about the battles which he experienced or the air raids suffered by his fiancee. Also with the collection are some 200 letters from his parents in Buxton, Derbyshire, and sister serving with the ATS, together with other letters from relations and friends and a large quantity of miscellaneous items, including service records, newspapers, books, journals, maps and other memorabilia collected during his service in North Africa and Italy.
