Privately printed illustrated memoir (104pp), written circa 2009, covering his training as a 17 year old with the Sea Cadets in Birmingham and then briefly on board the TS BOUNTY in Worcester (1940 – 1941), his basic and specialist training as a wireless operator in the RN shore establishment HMS COLLINGWOOD at Fareham, Hampshire (1941 – early 1942), his service as a Telegraphist in various shore postings in the United Kingdom, including three months in the Radio Room at the Admiralty (early – June 1942), his posting to the Australian destroyer HMAS NEPAL as a Telegraphist operating the ship's HF/DF equipment, including their passage from the United Kingdom to South Africa escorting a convoy (July – August 1942) and the ship's subsequent service with the Eastern Fleet supporting the invasion of Madagascar (September 1942), anti-submarine patrols and convoy escort duties off the South African coast and in the Indian Ocean (October 1942 – March 1943), a refit in Australia (April – May 1943), further convoy escort duties and sweeps for Japanese blockade runners in the Indian Ocean (June 1943 – February 1944) and deploying with the Eastern Fleet to their new base at Trincomalee in Ceylon (March – April 1944), his service as a Telegraphist in HMS ANDERSON, the secure W/T station in Colombo, Ceylon, listening in to Japanese radio transmissions on the Sourabaya – Tokyo frequency (April – December 1944), his passage back to the United Kingdom on the troopship CHRISTIAAN HUYGENS (December 1944 – January 1945) and service at Cookham camp near Rochester (early 1945), on HF/DF duties in HMS TERN, RNAS Twatt in the Orkney Islands (circa May – November 1945) and on homing aircraft duties in HMS SPARROWHAWK, RNAS Halesworth, Suffolk until his demobilisation (circa November 1945 – May 1946). The main interest of the memoir perhaps lies in its depiction of a young man's life on the lower deck and the occasional disciplinary issues in which he was involved and his entertaining accounts of his runs ashore and leaves in South Africa, Australia, India, Ceylon and the United Kingdom; while there is also a useful reference to the filming of IN WHICH WE SERVE on board NEPAL.
