A collection of 37 ms letters (97pp plus envelopes, ts transcript 16pp) written by a pre-war regular soldier during the period May 1907 – May 1917, covering principally his service as a Sergeant in the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards until October 1916, then as Captain in the 7/8th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers (46th Brigade in 15th (Scottish) Division) on the Western Front, detailing army life, complaints about his poor salary and an interesting account of Battalion sports (26 May 1916); together with a very detailed ms diary (200pp, ts transcript 23pp), October 1914 – October 1915, describing the journey to France, the First Battle of Ypres (October - November 1914) and fighting around Bethune, including an evocative account of trench life, life behind the lines, sketched maps of trenches and detailed descriptions of casualties within his Battalion; a photograph of 'Sgt F Causley's Squad, Sept 1914'; a Christmas 1909 photograph; a newspaper clipping relating to his award of the DCM with the 3rd Coldstreamers; and an in memoriam card 'Rest Well Brave Heart' following his death in action at Ypres (31 July 1917).
