Ts transcription of 28 letters (49pp), February 1915 - 2 May 1916, written by him to his family whilst serving as a Private with the 1/20th Battalion London Regiment (141st Brigade, 47th Division) describing his training in St Albans, embarking at Southampton for France, moving in and out of the trenches in the area around Loos, being a member of a working party maintaining and repairing trenches and dugouts, standing sentry duty, undertaking specialist training to become a machine gunner, his hope of being granted leave and his admittance to hospital with a foot injury; together with a ts transcription of a letter (3pp), 10 June 1916, from the Territorial Forces Record Office to his mother informing her of her son's death on 24 May 1916 and including excerpts from letters written by his fellow soldiers praising his courage and bravery. The collection also includes a ts introduction and foreword to the letters (4pp).
